No, sugar is not necessary for baking or proofing with quick yeast. However, you can hasten the process by adding a half-teaspoon of sugar or honey when proofing yeast.

Because it will be too hot and too close to direct heat, such as a heater, the yeast may be destroyed. The window sill in a sunny area will work well.
